Li Kaifu: Eight Mistakes You Should Avoid When Writing Your Resume

Each company will make a preliminary selection of job seekers by only skimming through their resumes, so the resume must not have mistakes at all. Many people just lose the opportunity to get an interview because of the seemingly trivial resume.

The following is my reminder of what mistakes you can never make:

Careless mistakes: mistakes such as a wrong letter not only make the employer think you are not serious, but also lead them to think that you do not cherish the job opportunity. They may further think you are a person who does not attach importance to details and quality.

Too long: a one-page resume for a fresh graduate is enough while those with work experience need to follow the 2-3-page resume limit.

Too many adjectives and too much boasting, less adjectives and more data advised: do not frequently use adjectives in your resume, like hard-working, responsible, self-motivated, team spirit and the like; use data more, such as performance, cost savings, market share, and so on.

Not targeted: you must personalize your resume based on each of the recruiting companies and the positions; you must carefully study the position description before you seek a job, and focus relevant points and avoid irrelevant points.

False content: for example, talking about things on your last job in the resume which may be linked to confidential matters, or include too much self-expression and exaggeration, like stealing the result of a team as one’s own.

Frequent job hopping: here “frequent” refers to the changing between jobs in less than a year or job hopping every time you get a new position, rather than staying in the same company, as the latter circumstance directly shows capability.

Layout lacks focus: you should know that a personnel manager may only spend 20 seconds for a quick look at your resume, so be sure your layout draws his attention to the most important message you want to express.

Too rigid: do not let your resume become a boring file. A resume shows not only your experience and skills, but also your personality. In the resume, it is acceptable to show your profound knowledge in the field, but the description must be able to maintain the readers’ interest
